| | Bossa Nova, new wave : there is something of that. Bossa Nova, carioca : it has a lot to do with the children of Rio the White, the middle-class Southern area. Bossa nova : a soundtrack for a group of friends trotting the musical globe. Bossa nova : streetwise music with the words hardly sung, a spare guitar line, single-finger piano and a beat in brackets. Bossa nova is all that and much more still : an indefinable feeling, a sort of blues, the bittersweet perfume of a country breathing in fresh air after years of political reaction and artistic conservatism.
Bossa nova showed a powerful appetite for many musical styles as it developed its singularity. In digging its own row, it drew on a vast field, its vocals gradually pruning away all the flourishes to produce lighter fare, music strong on meaning and signs.
